Description

Chudakarana, the Sanskrit term for Mundan, or the baby’s first haircut, is the name of the Mundan ceremony. Most Hindus adopt this as a ritualistic procedure, and parents take great care to ensure that their children carry out this act according to all accepted conventions.

When the child shaves off their original, first hair growth, usually leaving only the Shikha on the top rear of the head, this sanskara is usually conducted during the first or third year of life. Body hair is said to be a remnant of a previous existence. For the sake of the present birth’s wellbeing, these negative attributes are undesirable. Thus, Mundan is used to eliminate or lessen the effects of those negative characteristics.
