The Vedic Meaning of Pitru Rina (Ancestral Debt)
Hindu philosophy teaches that every soul is born with three fundamental debts: Deva Rina (debt to deities), Rishi Rina (debt to sages and gurus), and Pitru Rina (debt to parents and ancestors). Our very physical bodies, intellect, lineage, and cultural inheritance have been passed down by our departed forebears.
Shradh (derived from the word "Shraddha", meaning heartfelt faith and reverent devotion) is an annual opportunity to express gratitude to our departed parents and ancestors, offering water, sacred sesame, and food to facilitate their spiritual elevation in the afterlife.
The Sacred Vidhi of Tarpan and Pind Daan
A traditional Shradh ceremony proceeds through key scriptural components:
1. Deva, Rishi & Pitru Tarpan: Offering water mixed with Kusha grass, black sesame seeds (Kala Til), and white barley (Jau) through the auspicious Pitru Tirtha (the space between the thumb and index finger).
2. Pind Daan: Consecrating seven or twelve spherical balls (Pindas) made from cooked rice, barley flour, black sesame, honey, and ghee, representing sustenance for departed souls.
3. Panchabali: Offering five symbolic portions of food to Cow (Gau-bali), Dog (Shwana-bali), Crow (Kaka-bali), Gods (Deva-bali), and Ants/Insects (Pipelika-bali).
4. Brahmin Bhojan & Dakshina: Serving a sattvic meal to pious Brahmins with utmost humility and offering traditional Dakshina.
